Icarus - cryogenic cooling system
Since April 2010 a novel > 32 kW cryogenic cooling system has been operating at the LNGS underground laboratory of INFN in Italy cooling the Icarus Nutrino detector.
The system is designed for extreme redundancy and to operate non-stop for 10 years or more and is based on Stirling Cryogenics SPC-4 cryogenerators. The concept is unique and can also be applied on other high demanding cryogenic cooling application like HTS devices etc. A report is available describing the design and components and the first year of operation.
